Me too. Will definitely try to do so if the handling person is a trustworthy one. Too bad, until now I have not identified anyone yet. Do let me know if you found one.

I can give you my friend's contact number if you want. He has gotten his license after 3-4 weeks. He is helping his sisters to do also and currently looking for more people to get cheaper offer.

Please let me know if you interested and I will PM you his number.

hi all,

just joined this forum and was glad to find a topic on driving licenses....i just passed my theory test in my effort to get a UK license. Am in the southampton area, does anyone know any trusty instructors that are reasonable and available as soon as possible? I find it to be a chicken and egg situation....the test dates are like 2 whole mths away....and i cant seem to get any instructors available to even assess my first class so i know if i can book for a test ahead of time....

look forward to some replies :)

thanks

Hi Duhi,

Thanks for dropping by and welcome to FromMY!

I guess this have to depends on some luck. I guess it's good to get a good instructor first then book your test ahead. Don't pay like 10 hours payment ahead for discount fee. Just pay for an hour to see the service, if you think he's good then only pay for the discount fee he offers. If he's not good, just book another instructor, and let him know that you have learned how many hours from the previous instructor and he will continue teaching you from there.

Good luck!

Alvin

Right... i've tried to book for a practical test and they said the only available slot is somewhere in july coz the rest of the weeks before that is fully booked! that is too much time and money wasted i cant bear. a hongkong friend of mine is going back for a holiday for 2 weeks in may and so im taking the chance to do the conversion magic.

the question is, i have downloaded the appropriate forms and filled them in. A few things bother me:

1. Is it ok not to have a hongkong stamp on my passport? i only pass my passport for him to bring over so there will be no record of me entering HK at all!
2. On the application form, they ask for a Hongkong identity number.. can i leave this blank as i have not had one?
3. They also ask for a correspondence address in Hongkong. is it ok to use my friend's address?

Hopefully i will get some answers regarding this coz not being able to drive is driving me nuts! :P

I see. Thank you guys for the feedback. I did try the theory test online. Personally, I think the driving rules are almost the same in Malaysia.

One thing to share is if you have an NUS card, to can learn driving at around £7 per hour. So I am thinking of utilising whatever students benefits before my student identity ends.

Converting the licence? Sounds interesting, too bad I do not know anyone who do that. Saw an advertisement in a local Chinese grocery store but not willing to try. Like you said, losing a passport is really risky. Rather go through the safer way.

z3mms, do let me know your experience when you gone through everything. Good luck!

Alvin, how much in total did you pay in total? How many hours did you learn with the instructor?

I have also applied for a two jobs now. So far no replies yet. Hopefully I am able to get a job soon.

Hi, Did you say if we have NUS card, the lesson is £7 an hour? where can we get this information? Many thanks in advance

Mine is still in progress. How about your Malaysian Driving Licence? Did the Hong Kong Transport Department returned you your Malaysian Driving Licence?

You can go to NUS website, under the NUS Extra section. AA is doing around £10 per hour.

yes.. they returned back my malaysian driving license...

what puzzles me now is to fill up the D1 form in UK, in order to convert my Hongkong license to British..

one of the form asks "if you didnt pass your test in the issuing country, where did you pass the test?" ..

not sure if i should fill it with 'Malaysia' in there or just leave it blank... something tells me i should leave it blank :P

Cheers.

nope i did it thru my hong kong friend.. that's why i need to fill in the D1 form myself.
on a side note, i am also wondering if i can use the provisional license as a proof of identity instead of sending my passport over to them again.

Hmm, I think we should contact DVLA regarding that.

Finally... I got my full British driving license that lasts for until I'm 70 years old!

(ps: before this i always thought that converting license will only give a full license that lasts for only 5 years.. didnt realise will actually get a license for life)

Cool! I just got my Hong Kong Licence. May I know what are the documents that you sent for the exchange? What did you fill on the part asking where did you pass the driving test?

P/S: Does DVLA accept Provisional Licence as proof of identity?

weikianng,

once u get your hong kong license, it will be trivial to exchange it to british driving license.

just leave it blank for the part where it asks where u passed your driving test.

the documents you need to submit are:

1) D1 form u filled
2) your provisional license card
3) the paper counterpart of your provisional license
4) hong kong driving license (will not be returned to you once converted)

so yes your provisional license is accepted as proof of identity.. you wont need to submit your passport anymore.

you also dont need to fill in the proof of identity section ( i think it was section 6) ... so just leave that whole section blank.

when i submitted the form, i did get my friend to sign the back of the photo and fill in the appropriate section ( i think was section 7). whether this is required or not, im not sure. But i did that to be safe. i also havent stayed for more than 2 years even tho it says u suppose to get a friend who knows u within UK for at least 2 years to sign the back of your photo... that still seems to work. maybe it doesnt really matter because they already have your records when applying for provisional license last time.

submit your docs, give it two weeks and the full british license is yours ..

hope that helps.

good luck!
